LCY - He Hymns
Over the last few years, Bristol born, London based artist LCY has become one of the guiding lights in a scene of fans who like their club music deep, dark and with a heavy dose of rhythm. Releasing predominantly on their own label SZNS7N, LCY has transcended musical boundaries, taking from a wide range of musical influences to create their own fluid hybrid style that indulges the deepest desires of those who chase a visceral dancefloor response - uplifting a huge amount of unconventional producers alongside them in the process. Today marks the announcement of their first release on fabric Originals, the flagship label from global club imprint fabric, alongside a new single, ‘Bad Blood’.
Opening to a stark cascade of sonic shards and mechanised vocal chops, ‘Bad Blood’ descends into a sparse percussive workout. The track expertly makes use of space in its composition, stripping down its raw elements to reveal a beat that’s purpose built for sweat. Using glitching elements to find new elements of intricacy within its drum programming, LCY inexplicably creates a composition that’s wholly inviting despite its ominous sound - with even the track’s more human elements twisted to sound like they’re from an outer realm.
On the EP and track, LCY says:
“He Hymns is a song book written in relation to organised religion, its relations to my continued unpacking of gender and sexuality and how a lot of these forced conformities have subconsciously affected my musical expression and often conflict my existence and ability to move forward. Over the last 2 years I’ve been finding ways to tie songs of worship (dedicated to my own fictional worlds) into club tracks by writing these expressions and reframing them, with a special focus on somatics and how movement and dance can act as a form of therapy. Although this project doesn’t have its own non-fiction story-line its intent was to act as a hymn book from the same universe, it has served me as a form of creative healing.
The first single Bad Blood is one of the only purely darker sounding tracks on the records. It was created with raw hatred, self hatred, jealousy and resentment in mind placed on the B side in opposition to the more uplifting sounds of side of A.”
LCY’s He Hymns EP is a dynamic exploration of LCY’s search for self within songs of worship, and how movement has provided a solace from inner turmoil. Simultaneously warm and unrelentingly intense, He Hymns perfectly sets the stall for LCY’s vision for the club; transporting the listener to an alternate future in which the driving heart of electronic music sits unapologetically at the fore. He Hymns is dynamic, confounding club music that is still inherently propulsive - ready to lift the curtain on a new level of invention within the electronic space.
